The golden feather in the gown of Cherpu, Govt. Vocational and Higher Secondary school, The Lead school of Thrissur
The cultural capital of Kerala, the country of Poorams, Thrissivaperur. From the heart of this town, nearly 11 k.m. situated Cherpu Grama panchayath. In this Cherpu Grama panchayath, from Perumbillissery centre through Kodungallur-Triprayar main road nearly 100 metre, there we can see the buildings of G.V.H.S.S. Cherpu & our Gramodharanam school. The giver of Vidhya, Sri Thiruvullakkavu Dharmasastha, blesses this school each and every time because the school faces this Temple of Sri Dharmasastha
In the history of Kerala, Cherpu Grama panchayath got a special status because of Peruvanam Mahadeva Temple. The western part of this panchayath have ponds, rivers, streams and farm fields. In olden times these places were covered with water. This place got its name, Cherpu, because there is a mingling of hills and ponds. The cultural important place, Peruvanam Mahadeva Temple belong to this Panchayath. It's history connected with the places like Peruvanam, Cherpu, Chevoor, Thevar Road, Ettumuna a place of farm fields, Padinjattumuri, Parakovil which is a centre of Jains and Urakam. During the historical period, the south of Cherpu guarded Kodungallur Oozhath Sasthavu and North guarded by Akamala Sasthavu and East guarded by Kuthiranmala Ayyappa and Western part guarded by Edathirithi Ayyappa.
In 1934 Mahatma Gandhi came to Kerala for the upliftment of Harijans. During that time he reached Cherpu Mekavu Kshethra Ground (17/01/1934) and deliver a speech. This ground now known as 'Mahatma Maidan' and there is a 'Gandhi Mandapam' which is built in 1948.
Before our independence, there is a centre of 'Gramodharanam' which turned as a school now i.e., our school. During 1938, when Shanmukam Chetti was the Diwan of Kochi, the mutiny of
Dr. A.R. Menon, the Kochin congress, became as the minister. He helped much to begin a centre of Gramodharanam to uplift the cultural heriditary and the needs of people of cherpu. Likewise Gandhiji's dream of Panchayath Raj bloomed here. In this centre there is different types of small scale industries like spinning, weaving, soap-making, carpentary works, paper-making and bee-keeping. So this country known as 'Vardha of Kochi. Later. sri Yesudasan lead all the activities of this centre, who got training from "Marthanda" another gramodharanam centre in Thiruvananthapuram. He was interested in agriculture so he planted trees in the ground of the school, now it is known as Padanathara in our school. The handicraft centre, handloom, Khadi industries, spinning and weaving, which were parts of gramodharana continued now also. Likewise this school got its name "gramodharanam" Later, after the change of the government, there was an A.E.O. Office.
The first school in Cherpu is C.N.N. High school. Before that the pupils in cherpu go to Trichur or Ollur for their education. So all the pupil didn't get a chance to educate, especially girls.
